The Vanishing of Ethan Carter, an upcoming psychological horror of considerable promise, is a labor of love born from the efforts of the 8-man team at Polish studio The Astronauts. The team itself, consisting of seasoned veterans migrating from People Can Fly (Painkiller, Bulletstorm) is working hard to create a horror tale that will draw inspiration from the “weird fiction stories and other tales of macabre” of the early 20th century in order to create something quite memorable that will haunt us for long days and weeks. Ready your headphones and turn off the lights, says the team, and who are we not to listen?

The Vanishing of Ethan Carter puts us in the role of Paul Prospero, a detective of supernatural prowess who possesses the disturbing ability to relive the final moments of deceased murder victims, thus acquiring essential clues to further his own investigation. How much we actually deduce based on these visions is, however, completely up to the player, says The Astronauts.

The Vanishing of Ethan CarterPlatform: PC, PS4Genre: AdventureDeveloper: The AstronautsRelease: 09/25/2014Rated: 16+PEGIThe game will make use of the power of the Unreal Engine 3 in order to conjure up the game’s primary setting, the forest-covered hills of Red Creek Valley, where players will have to investigate the mysterious disappearance of the young boy Ethan Carter, as well as the grisly murders surrounding his case. Creating a fitting atmosphere to go with the journey is of extra importance to the team, says the Astronauts: the game – being played from a first-person perspective and lacking combat encounters – will place exploration, interaction and criminal investigation into the spotlight. “We want the players to feel like they're really there, shiver when it's cold and lower their heads when it's windy.” – says designer Adrian Chmielarz.

To what extent the grim tale of the enthusiastic Polish studio will test the player’s courage, we’ll find out soon enough. The Vanishing of Ethan Carter is currently scheduled to be released sometime this year on PC as a purely digital download, although the developers have not ruled out the possibility of porting the title to home consoles, either. For those needing a quick taste of what they can expect, a prequel comic depicting some of the events leading up to the main story is currently available here for your viewing pleasure.
