The Outer Worlds devs discuss combat, weapons and tactical options

The Outer Worlds was probably one of the most exciting announcements at last year’s The Game Awards for those hungry for more roleplaying games – developed by Obsidian Entertainment alongside original Fallout creators Tim Cain and Leonard Boyarsky, it’s shaping up to be a real RPG treat for fans of the genre. In an interview conducted by Game Informer, co-director Tim Cain and lead designer Charles Staples discuss the various tactical aspects of The Outer Worlds’ battle system, including the so-called Tactical Time Dilation, an ability that lets you slow down time in combat, as well as the importance of relying on your companions and their unique skills. What’s more, there’s even a specific “leader” role in addition to the usual combat/stealth/speech trio found in most RPGs: having your companions around will be especially important if you choose this path, as leaders are able to gain access to their allies’ combat skills, Cain explained during the interview. And on the topic of having enough options for different play styles, the team has confirmed that you’ll also have access to a wide variety of weapon types and brands including pistols, energy weapons and even a futuristic-looking scythe that keeps reminding me of Clive Barker’s Undying.
