A movie adaptation of quite possibly one of the most memorable games of the Playstation 2 era is (still) being made into a movie, and is now under the direction of Andrés Muschietti, responsible for the 2013 horror film Mama, Sony announced. The script is still being handled by Seth Lochhead, most known for his work on 2011’s action-thriller Hanna.

In Shadow of the Colossus – the game, that is –, you take on the role of a lone adventurer who travels to a faraway wasteland with a single purpose: to revive a recently deceased young woman. In order to do this, he makes a deal with the local deity, Dormin: he is to slay the thirteen massive Colossi roaming the forbidden lands, and the girl will live once again. Our man accepts the deal and sets out on his quest, which is where the player joins in to explore the land, locate the thirteen beasts and defeat them: each Colossus is a lengthy boss fight requiring unique strategies and using both the environment and your wits to succeed. The game also notably features very little dialogue, which makes me wonder how a movie adaptation will play out, but we’ll just have to wait and see.

No cast or release date has been announced yet for the film.
