Welcome to GTOGG’s November 2024 edition of Promising Indie Game Releases, where we highlight indie and non-mainstream titles that we believe deserve your attention – in other words, “look at all this potentially cool stuff you might’ve missed otherwise”. That would’ve been too long for a title, though.
In any case, let’s get right down to it.
Death of the Reprobate
Solo developer Joe Richardson’s latest point & click adventure offers quite a unique combination: it mixes the comical style of the Monkey Island series with a unique art style reminiscent of a classic Monty Python sketch. The story begins as a dying Immortal John gives a task to his soon-to-be-heir, Malcolm: he must perform seven good deeds before sundown in order to receive his inheritance. And so, with the prospect of untold riches as his primary motivation, Malcolm sets off into a world inspired by Renaissance paintings, partaking in all kinds of mischief, mayhem and tomfoolery. Here’s our full review of this deliciously farcical masterpiece.
Beyond the Darkness
Tapping into the realm of childhood fears, Beyond the Darkness is a horror adventure game starring Millie, a young girl hoping to find her lost family. In order to do that, she’ll have to traverse the twisted landscapes of memories, navigating through an ever-encroaching darkness with only a tiny little lamp to give her comfort. Keep in mind, though, that the monsters slithering about in the dark pose a real threat, so make sure your lamp doesn’t go out as you explore and solve puzzles, otherwise... you might be in for an unpleasant surprise.
Trash Goblin
Ever wanted to become a goblin that digs up curious discarded items and then cleans them up, restoring them to their former glory? If so, Trash Goblin might be for you – and if you know me, you’re probably aware that I enjoy games about cleaning things, so naturally, the project had to be on our list. You don’t just clean and restore trinkets, though: you also combine them to create new and interesting items that you can then sell to interested customers.
Songs of Silence
Songs of Silence combines a vibrant Art Nouveau visual style with real-time battles and turn-based kingdom management as players wage war against opposing powers, hoping to emerge victorious. Finding themselves in a world of conflict, players will have to commandeer one of three available factions, each with their own heroes and play styles, while exploring a narrative-driven single player campaign – that said, don’t worry if you’d rather test your mettle against human opponents, as the game will feature various cooperative and competitive multiplayer game modes as well.
Mirthwood
Described as an RPG life sim, Mirthwood begins as you flee a war-torn continent in order to start fresh in another land. Featuring an open world with a variety of zones and landscapes to discover, the game will actually let you live out your medieval fantasy life as you see fit: you can start your own little homestead, managing crops, rearing animals and trading with cities... or you can set off into the wilderness and become a swashbuckling adventurer. The choice is yours.
Enigma of Fear
A paranormal mystery adventure, Enigma of Fear will have you follow the curious exploits of Mia, who ventures into the Perimeter – a place that “doesn’t exist” – in order to find her missing father. As the daughter of a legendary paranormal agent, Mia will engage in deduction and investigation alongside her trusty partner as she seeks to answer some burning questions: what is the Perimeter, how does the so-called Cult of Fear come into the picture, and why did her father disappear in the first place?
