Welcome to GTOGG’s June 2022 edition of Promising Indie Game Releases, where we highlight indie and non-mainstream titles that we believe deserve your attention – in other words, “look at all this potentially cool stuff you might’ve missed otherwise”. That would’ve been too long for a title, though.

In any case, let’s get right down to it.

Card Shark

Starring a mute man, Card Shark has you dive head-first into the world of gambling in 18th century France – however, to make sure the cards, so to speak, are never stacked against you, you’re going to cheat. And you’re going to cheat a lot. Master the craft, learn new tricks and fool your opponents into thinking you’re just lucky, but remember: do NOT get caught.

Overlord: Escape from Nazarick

A 2D metroidvania based on the popular anime/light novel series, Overlord: Escape from Nazarick invites you into a rich dark fantasy universe with plenty of secrets to uncover as you take on the role of an amnesiac Clementine on a quest to regain her lost powers and memories. Get ready for plenty of action, tons of acrobatic parkour and an original story overseen by Overlord creator Kugane Maruyama.

Souldiers

Souldiers is a game whose demo I briefly sampled not too long ago, and I quite vividly recall coming away from it highly impressed. Sporting incredible pixel art, tight, responsive controls and a fairly interesting narrative to boot, it is everything I could ever want from a metroidvania-style game that hopes to recapture the glory days of the 16-bit era – also, have I mentioned that the story involves Valkyries and Ragnarok? Because it does.

MADiSON

Focusing on its dark and sinister narrative, MADiSON will place you in the shoes of a seemingly helpless protagonist who has been forced by a malicious entity (the ghost of a murderer, apparently) to carry out various bloody and abominable acts – armed with a trusty instant camera and your own wits, it’s now up to you explore your surroundings, solve mind-bending puzzles and – with some luck – survive this nightmarish ordeal.

Silt

A surreal horror-adventure game oozing atmosphere and style, Silt invites players into a monochrome underwater world with countless mysteries to be unearthed. The journey ahead of you, however, will not be without obstacles: prepare to face strange entities and massive sea giants that make their home in the murky depths below, all the while making use of your unique ability to possess and take control of sea creatures in order to solve a variety of puzzles.

Madshot

When our protagonist, in his search for eternal life, inadvertently invites unspeakable cosmic horrors to invade the world… it doesn’t quite end well. The mighty Cthulhu himself ends up swallowing your city whole, unleashing terror and mayhem – but also giving you the opportunity to stop him from within. Featuring procedurally generated levels and a stylish, comic-book like aesthetic, Madshot invites you to dive into the rabbit hole of madness, utilizing countless different weapons and upgrades to take down dozens of eldritch abominations and towering, horrific bosses.

And that’s our list for now! Did you discover a new indie game to look forward to? Well, we hope you did. In any case, don’t forget to check back in about a month for our next episode, where we’ll be taking a look at the indie games of July 2022!
