Welcome to GTOGG’s January 2022 edition of Promising Indie Game Releases, where we highlight indie and non-mainstream titles that we believe deserve your attention – in other words, “look at all this potentially cool stuff you might’ve missed otherwise”. That would’ve been too long for a title, though.

In any case, let’s get right down to it.

Hidden Deep

Hidden Deep gives you a rather daunting task: as the leader of a search & rescue team sent down to a suboceanic research facility, it’s your job to discover what happened to the previous expedition, rescue any potential survivors… and live to tell the tale. Command your team of experts, use heavy equipment and gadgetry to complete missions, and face off against the alien horrors that lurks in the depths, either alone or in co-op – no pressure, right?

COGEN: Sword of Rewind

COGEN puts you in the role of main heroine Kohaku, who explores the futuristic streets of Cogen City and uses the so-called Ouroboros System in order to turn back time by 3 seconds whenever she dies. Pretty convenient, right? Well, that’s because you’ll need it: enemies hit hard, and even a single mistake can easily spell your doom, so rewind, replay and evolve your play style to become the ultimate futuristic warrior.

KINGDOM of the DEAD

KINGDOM of the DEAD is hoping to take you back to the 90s – in spirit, anyway. Taking place across various locations on the East Coast of the US, players will have to face a literal army from hell as they try to close off the Gates of Death in order to put an end to an encroaching nightmare. Featuring 8 weapons and locations, various difficulty modes and a unique, black-and-white visual style reminiscent of classic comic books, the game is shaping up to be one hell of a demon-stomping adventure for fans of old-school first-person shooters.

Blackwind

The bug-like alien race of the Raknos is invading the planet, destroying colony after colony, and you’re just a teenager stuck in a large mecha robot. Thankfully, that robot you’re stuck in is capable of absolutely devastating everything in its path, delivering brutal finishing moves while slicing aliens to ribbons – you’ll just have to learn how to pilot it, one step at a time.

Diplomacy is Not an Option

Make war, not love is probably the motto of the battle-hungry king whose questionable exploits force you, a minor lord, to protect your castle against hordes upon hordes of rebellious peasants out for blood – your blood. And if you think the enemy army is the only thing trying to kill you, worry not – hunger, starvation and devastating plagues can also ravage your troops, making your feudal life harsher than ever before.

And that’s our list for now! Did you discover a new indie game to look forward to? Well, we hope you did. In any case, don’t forget to check back in about a month for our next episode, where we’ll be taking a look at the indie games of February 2022!
