Heroine’s Quest: The Herald of Ragnarok, a point and click adventure/RPG hybrid paying homage to Sierra games of old – in particular, Quest for Glory – has recently been released.

As its subtitle implies, the main premise of Heroine’s Quest is heavily inspired by aspects of Norse mythology: according to the tale, the wise Odinn, after having defeated his arch-nemeses, the frost giants, created the land of Midgar from their remains. The giants, however, swore revenge – one day, the apocalypse – known as Ragnarok – would arrive to lay waste upon the land of Midgar. As winters are growing colder, and the wilderness ever more dangerous in the land of Jarnvidr, many whisper of the return of the feared frost giants – our story begins during such troubled times, when the jarl of Jarnvidr decides to call for a hero who would stand up against the coming dark.

Much like many of the classics used as an inspiration, Heronie’s Quest, too, will include a variety of RPG elements besides its trademark point and click gameplay: these include the player’s ability to freely choose between three classes (warrior, sorceress, rogue or a hybrid combination using skills from all three) as well as the presence of a battle system typically not present in more traditional point and click adventures. The game will offer two worlds and three distinct cities to explore, as well as a decent-sized adventure matching the classics in length. Furthermore, the development team also mentioned the possibility of solving various problems or sidequests in multiple different ways (much like in the Quest for Glory franchise, different classes will have an advantage in certain situations depending on their skills), which in itself is meant to boost the title’s replay value and encourage subsequent playthroughs. The game also boasts of full voice acting, as well as an atmospheric soundtrack similarly composed in the vein of classics.

We purposefully left the best piece of news for last – Heroine’s Quest: The Herald of Ragnarok is a freeware title, and is currently available completely free of charge from IndieDB’s main site.
