Pixelmage Games, a team formed of veteran developers who once worked on EverQuest, Star Wars: Galaxies and many other titles are putting together a Kickstarter campaign for their open world roguelike RPG titled Hero’s Song. Possibly the most interesting feature that stayed with me after a glance at Hero’s Song is the importance it places upon creating unique game worlds. By assigning one of many gods to your world, you will shape its geography, history and culture – to use one of the developers’ examples, a world ruled by a sea god may have more oceans, while in another realm, a certain race might have never existed at all. This, naturally, has an effect on gameplay as well, so if a long war has made a certain race extinct in your world, you won’t be able to choose it at character creation, and so on. At this point, one cannot help but wonder what kind of worlds one would create under the influence of some of the nastier, Lovecraftian gods that are also present in the current lineup – possibly nothing nice, but that would be the fun of it.

Hero’s Song aims to be a hardcore game tailored for hardcore gamers, giving players the ability to either join other worlds online or host their own servers for hundreds of other adventurers. The team has already raised $1 million in investment and is looking for another $800,000 through Kickstarter to finish the project and release the game as soon as this October.
