There’s just something special about oldschool 3D graphics from the PlayStation 1 era – I’m not entirely sure if it’s purely the nostalgia talking here, but games like NIGHTMARE OPERATOR, from developer DDDistortion, just make me want to immediately dive head-first into their retro-style, low-poly worlds to explore their every pixelated nook and cranny. But before I go on a tangent, let me actually get to the premise of the game: you see, it takes place in the ruins of Tokyo (in 2036, to be precise) as it’s being haunted by eldritch monstrosities, that is, youkai inspired by urban legends and Japanese folklore. In this world of otherworldly threats, you assume the role of Misha, a trained youkai hunter specializing in taking down said nasties while wielding a special gun with various weapon modules corresponding to different status effects such as bleeding, freezing and so on. As for your opponents, well... if the trailer is anything to go by, you’ll be taking on supernatural entities like a powerful Inugami, massive skeleton beasts with meat still hanging from their bones, or a group of bizarre, schoolgirl-like creatures with monstrous mouths. I found myself sufficiently creeped out, so if you’re interested in feeling that way, do absolutely watch the trailer below:
