Before even the first Witcher installment took gamers by storm, the Gothic series was usually people’s go-to game for a third person open world RPG that presented players with a harsh world and a similarly harsh challenge. Or at least it was mine. You started off with only the clothes you had on your back, and even a mangy old wolf could easily gnaw your arm off – but it was fine, because the world felt alive, the NPCs led daily lives, and you had goals to work towards. It all felt real and believable. And now it’s getting both a facelift and a tremendous amount of new stuff – a Russian-made mod by the name of Gothic 2: Returning apparently adds a good 250 hours of content to the game, essentially quadrupling its size.

Among other things, the mod adds eight new locations, several pieces of new gear as well as new quests, NPCs, monsters, and magic; and that’s not even taking into account the new combat animations, difficulty levels, and – for the truly hardcore – an optional survival system. Returning also allows you to join guilds you weren’t able to before, such as the Necromancers. And although the project is voiced in Russian, it provides English subtitles as well.

Gothic 2: Returning requires a copy of Gothic 2: Gold Edition to run. For installation instructions, have a look at the video below:
