So what would Final Fantasy VII – the original PS1 game, mind – look like if it merged together with a western open-world RPG? If that’s a question you’ve asked yourself at one point in your life, I’ve got good news – someone actually tried doing it, and called it Time Guardian. Indie dev Rodensoft decided to build on the game just a little bit, adding features like a complete day-night cycle (with a built-in calendar), NPCs with their own schedules, repeatable quests, factions, crafting, lockpicking and a horde of other stuff, all shown off in the video below. Either way, if you think a project like this would be tremendously ambitious and time-consuming, you’d be right – Rodensoft has since stopped working on it. The developer’s efforts are now being poured into a similar, but completely fresh
RPG project made with the Unreal Engine.
Aside from the video itself, there’s also a forum topic dedicated to the game, which you can check out right over here.
