It hasn’t been that long since we first reported on Black Book, developer Morteshka‘s promising RPG/adventure game hybrid with deck-building mechanics and a heavy Slavic influence – well, the project is currently amassing funds on Kickstarter, and its campaign is doing quite well. For those that need a quick refresher, Black Book stars young sorceress Vasilisa, who decides to abandon her apprenticeship to instead marry her beloved – their happiness, however, is short-lived, as the man dies under mysterious circumstances. Vasilisa then sets out on a journey with the legendary Black Book, a powerful tome that could help her grant any wish. The game operates with a turn-based combat system that uses cards as ammunition – you do battle by sifting through your spell book and combining different types of cards (each with a unique effect) to create powerful spells; obviously, which cards you use and how you combine them is up to you, hence the whole deck-building aspect. During your travels, you’ll also meet a cast of unique individuals (including a talking cat; this wouldn’t be a witch game without one) and even recruit several demons to do your bidding.

As noted earlier, Black Book’s Kickstarter campaign has been rather successful – it’s already reached its initial funding goal of $35,000 and several stretch goals, meaning the game will now include English voice acting, a brand-new companion, and even a series of side quests that flesh out the backstories of certain characters. There’s also a playable demo available right now on Steam, which features the entire first day of the game.

Black Book is scheduled to launch in 2021 for PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Switch.
