The PS Vita’s library is getting one of the most bizarre-looking adventure games of recent times in the form of Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc, out now on the aforementioned console. The game was originally released in Japan a little over three years ago on the PSP, and proceeded to never leave Japanese shores. Including the 2012 iOS/Android ports as well, the game remained out of the reach of Western fans until NIS America’s 2013 announcement that they would be bringing the crime-solving murder mystery to English-speaking gamers on the PS Vita.

According to the game’s basic premise, a group of high school students – including the protagonist – are admitted to the elite school of Hope’s Peak Academy, only to end up trapped within its walls. The only way to escape? Murder each other without getting caught. This basic setup bares faint resemblance to the highly-acclaimed Japanese survivor-drama Battle Royale, no doubt – players are thrown into a situation where everyone can be suspicious and no one can be trusted. All of this goes hand in hand with a truly unique, albeit somewhat bizarre art style that not every gamer might be able to digest quite easily at first, but most definitely helps in differentiating the game from its peers.

In terms of its gameplay, Danganronpa is primarily an adventure game reminiscent of the well-known Ace Attorney series, consisting of finding clues, building up evidence and using it in order to eventually drive the culprit into a corner. The latter – no doubt most exciting – part of the game takes place during so-called Class Trials, during which players examine testimonies and point out contradictions in order to advance the plot.

A game has also produced a sequel: the 2012 continuation, titled Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair is, at the moment, only available to Japanese gamers, but will be making its way to the West this Fall according to NIS America’s recent announcement.
