Indie studio Airship Syndicate – comprised of ex-Darksiders devs – is aiming to change the landscape of western JRPGs: their promising roleplaying game, Battle Chasers: Nightwar is based on Joe Madureira’s late 90s-early 00s comic series of the same title and is designed to be a love letter to JRPG classics of old, telling the story of a young adventurer looking for her long lost father. The game mixes traditional turn-based combat with challenging, randomly generated dungeon exploration, all brought to life with a crisp and colorful art style that’s a joy to look at, adding traditionally animated cutscenes for important story segments and plenty of replay value for hardcore gamers.

The game’s Kickstarter campaign is doing quite well, with the main project and several stretch goals already funded – an estimated release date is currently set for December of 2016 on a variety of platforms including PC, Mac, Xbox One and PS4. There’s more – alongside the game itself, the Battle Chasers comic series – abandoned in 2001 with the story unfinished – is going to continue as well, right where the previous issue left off nearly 15 years ago.
