Earlier this year, Zenimax Media’s Battlecry Studios announced their free to play online team-based shooter/slasher, BattleCry. This happened back in May, when the sun was shining and birds were still chirping – now we’re nearing the end of the year, and BattleCry is finally ready to show off some gameplay. The first thing you might notice is how much this all resembles Team Fortress 2, but that’s not exactly a bad thing, truth be told. Nonetheless, the bleak, semi-cartoony outward appearance definitely resembles Valve’s immensely popular online shooter, with quite a bit of Dishonored’s overall look and feel – conjured up by Viktor Antonov – sprinkled on top for good measure.

This new gameplay footage shows off three classes, each with different play styles, be it the heavy-hitting grunt with the massive sword, the precise archer or the nimble, stealthy rogue that uses the power of invisibility for a tactical advantage. Despite my initial parallels to TF2, the whole thing actually reminds me a little bit of Nosgoth as well, a game that I had a decent bit of fun with back when I first tried it just a few months ago. I do recommend you check out the video to see the game in action, although how well it actually plays is something we’ll only be able to properly gauge once it’s released – a video can only show so much. There’s a bit of that “been there, done that” feel to the whole thing, so I’ll remain only cautiously optimistic for now – still, tried and tested doesn’t necessarily equal bad, and besides – despite my initial skepticism –, my first impressions of Nosgoth itself were fairly positive as well, if you remember.

BattleCry will begin its beta phase sometime in 2015, starting with Australia and New-Zealand first, then the rest of the world, the studio explained.
