What does tactical platformer actually mean, though? Well, the pitch video more or less speaks for itself – other than exploring the land and crafting tools and weapons to help you and your partner (for the game centers around the duo of Bart, the old engineer and his granddaughter, Clu), you can utilize said tools on the field. Basically, you set up turrets, protect chokepoints and other targets, and fun times are had by all. If that sounds interesting to you, know that you’re not alone: almost three thousand people feel the same way, with Aegis Defenders’ Kickstarter sitting pretty on well over $100.000, with possibly more to come. And if you ask me, I’m very much hoping that’s going to be the case: if you take a quick look at the stretch goals, you can see that the $125.000 tier will guarantee the inclusion of a local co-op mode. Seeing how “is there co-op?” was the first thing that came to my mind after first encountering Aegis Defenders, this is one feature that would be a shame to miss out on. Normally, you can easily switch between characters so that both Bart and Clu can do their thing even if you play on your own, but let’s be honest: this is the kind of game that, I assume, would be best played with a friend. You’ll also be happy to hear that the game was recently Greenlit, so a Steam release is pretty much guaranteed.
In any case, there’s still a solid week left of the campaign, so if you wish to make local co-op happen, you still can. The full game is planned for a December 2015 release window, launching on Windows and Mac, and now that the $100.000 stretch goal has been reached, Playstation 4 as well.
