Developer Digital Mind Games and publisher Kwalee have announced a December 12 launch date for The Spirit of the Samurai, a 2.5D action-adventure game with soulslike and metroidvania elements. Inspired by Japanese folklore and mythology, the game will follow the quest of three playable protagonists, the samurai Takeshi, his loyal warrior cat Chisai, and the tiny spirit Kodama as they take up arms against the vicious Oni trying to conquer the lands with his undead army. Naturally, three characters means three different approaches to various situations, from precise katana combat to archery, magical powers and feline platforming. Customizable combos are another aspect I found interesting about The Spirit of the Samurai: as you proceed through your adventure, you can unlock combo slots, then fill them with any unlocked move of your choice in order to create your very own combos, essentially tailoring them to your needs.
