What feels like several ages ago, I talked about a promising indie game called Firewatch – a game where you take on the role of a lone fire lookout stationed in the Wyoming wilderness. He’s up in his tower, with the vast forest landscape stretching far below him. That all sounds nice and simple – however, there’s more to this wilderness, as developer Campo Santo specifically introduced the title as a mystery story. There’s something going on out there in the forest, I’m assuming, but we can’t quite know for sure what, and the recently released trailer brings no answers, either – but that’s how any good mystery should be, and Firewatch has successfully piqued my curiosity.

By the way, if the reveal trailer wasn’t quite enough for you, worry not: the folks at Campo Santo played through the game’s PAX demo and streamed it for all to see. And even if you missed it, you can watch it archived. It showcases some of the freedom given to the player in the game, allowing the main character to explore the wilds in the way he prefers, solving problems in various potential ways, and choosing how to respond to the woman on the other end of his radio – the only person he can turn to for help and counsel. If the game’s premise is at all interesting to you, I highly recommend checking out this short gameplay presentation.

Once again, no specific release date has been mentioned: as before, Firewatch is still scheduled to be released sometime on 2015.
